Reliance Jio FTTH broadband services

Reliance Industries plans to spend a further Rs 18,000 crore additional investment required for its fibre network as it expands Jio’s 4G reach, reports Business Standard. The Reliance Jio fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband services has already been offering trials at a few locations and the services will expand to more cities soon.

Based on the information posted by users on social media networks, the Reliance Jio FTTH broadband services offers speed ranging from 70 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 100 Mbps. This is way faster than what the competition is currently offering in the market.

As with Reliance Jio, pricing would be a key factor for the success of Reliance Jio broadband services.

Reliance Jio is expected to launch direct-to-home (DTH) TV services, which will broadcast native TV channels and stream online content with the help of Jio’s broadband services.

The Reliance Jio DTH service would offer more than 350 channels – with at least 50 high-definition (HD) channels. Also, the DTH services will make use of Jio’s cloud capabilities to store content for later viewing purpose and therefore the user will get the flexibility to save the program directly on cloud, therefore, eliminating the need of external storage device.(read more)

'Bahubali 2 likely to rake in nearly Rs 1,000 crore

The movie has stirred a box-office storm even before it hits the screens on Friday

Nearly two years after releasing the first part of his magnum opus “Bahubali-The Beginning”, director S S Rajmouli is all set to release the concluding part of the saga.

“Bahubali 2: The Conclusion” has stirred a box-office storm even before it hits the screens on Friday.

The first part, which ended at perhaps the most titillating junctures in the recent cinema history, opened to blockbuster collections in the range of Rs 50 crore on day one and went on to collect a massive Rs 650 crore (gross) at the worldwide box-office. The Rs 200-crore franchise is expected to take a record opening, getting close to or even exceeding its predecessor’s record.

Starring Telugu actors Prabhas and Rana Dagubatti along with Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty, the film will be released in as many as 6,500 screens in the country, including 3D and IMAX — the third film from India to be released in IMAX format (the first two being Dhoom 3 in 2013 and Bang Bang in 2015).

With no other movie releasing on the same day as Bahubali-2, the movie is well-positioned to break box-office records in the southern states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Modi during his day-long visit to the Queen of Hills launched the central government’s UDAN, or “Ude Desh ka Har Nagarik” scheme, building efficient regional air connectivity, from Jubbarhatti, the tabletop airport located 2,196 metre above sea-level and some 22 km from here.

Himachal govt yet to approve viability gap funding demand made by Alliance Air of Rs 1.4 lakh/flight

An Alliance Air ATR-42 aircraft with 15 passengers will take off from Shimla airport on 11.15 am on Thursday heralding the launch of regional connectivity scheme (RCS).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the Shimla-Delhi flight from Himachal Pradesh capital and launch two other services (Kadapa-Hyderabad and Nanded-Hyderabad) under the government policy, which aims to link unconnected towns with affordable fares.

The Kadapa-Hyderabad and Nanded-Hyderbad flights will be operated by TruJet and minimum tickets on these two routes is priced at Rs 1,000 one way.

“We will operate the ATR-42 aircraft five times a week between Delhi-Shimla. The demand is positive and seats on the route are filling up fast,” said Alliance Air chief executive officer C S Subbhaih. Alliance Air is a subsidiary of Air India.

MCD election 2017: Threat for AAP govt, Delhi may see early Assembly polls

MCD results fallout: Warning bells for BJP MPs; Kejriwal's image in tatters

As Gujarat CM, Modi replaced at least a third of all sitting legislators before assembly polls

The results of the Delhi civic polls lead to some obvious conclusions, and not so obvious near-term possibilities. These include fresh assembly polls in Delhi by the end of the year, the likelihood of several incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha members might be replaced in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and more leaders quitting the Congress party.

  1. Modi wave

The BJP victory in the polls is primarily because of the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, brilliantly leveraged by party chief Amit Shah with deft organisational work.

Read more: MCD results: Kejriwal’s quest for power behind AAP loss, says Anna Hazare

It is true that BJP won the last two civic polls as well, but the party campaign in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls focused on Modi’s leadership, not of any local leaders. Today, Shah credited the victory to Modi’s leadership.

The emphatic win also suggests that the party has recovered the vote share it received in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, which slipped out of its hand in the 2015 assembly polls. In 2014, the BJP won all seven Lok Sabha seats and a vote share of over 45 per cent. This reduced to 34 per cent in 2015 assembly polls, where Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 67 of the 70-seats.

The Uttar Pradesh assembly polls have contributed to BJP’s popularity in areas where migrants from eastern UP and Bihar predominate. There was a time when AAP held sway on the ‘purabiyas’ of Delhi.(read more)

No end to data wars: Reliance Jio free offers to continue for 12-18 months

Reliance Jio likely to continue free offers

Jio reached the 100 million user mark in the first 170 days

The free schemes and recharge options that Reliance Jio is offering to its customers is likely to continue for the next 12-18 months, which means other telecom services providers like Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL will have to step up efforts to counter Jio’s strategy.

Jio’s tactic would lead to pressure on the average revenue per user (ARPU) of incumbent operators, US bank Morgan Stanley said in a report. It added that ARPU for Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India has been effectively capped at about Rs 300 due to Jio’s current offers, a report published in The Economic Times said.

Jio prepaid plans start from as low as Rs 19, and go up to Rs. 9,999, while postpaid plans are available at Rs. 309, Rs. 509, and Rs. 999 denomination. Jio launched its 4G service commercially on September 5, 2016 for free and crossed 50 million subscribers in just 83 days, and 100 million in 170 days, adding at an average rate of 6 lakh subscribers per day.

The company said that in terms of data usage it “has become the largest network globally” and plans to add one lakh mobile sites in coming months to double the network size.

The Morgan Stanley report mentioned that Jio, which started services on September 5, has netted 6 per cent of the country’s wireless subscribers and aims to get at least 15 per cent.

Reliance Jio extended the free usage period for Jio services to its existing and new customers till March 31, 2017. Jio reached the 100 million user mark in the first 170 days, adding consumers at an average of 600,000 a day.(read more)

TCS, Infosys got only 8.8% of total H-1B visas: Nasscom’s rebuttal to US

TCS, Infosys got only 8.8% of total H-1B visas: Nasscom's rebuttal to US

Indian IT firms account for less than 20 per cent of the H-1B visas

Indian IT industry’s apex organisation has said that the two top companies — TCS and Infosys — got only 8.8 per cent of the H-1B visas for placement of workers in the United States.

“Of the six Indian IT companies, software majors TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) and Infosys received 7,504 H-1B visas in FY 2015, which is 8.8 per cent of the total H-1B visas,” said the National Association of Software Services and Companies (Nasscom) in a statement here.

The apex body’s clarification was in response to a US official last week accusing top Indian IT firms TCS and Infosys of unfairly cornering majority of the H-IB visas, by applying more in the lottery system.

Only six Indian IT firms were among the top 20 recipients of the H-1B visas in fiscal 2015 for their professionals to work in the US, said Nasscom.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week to reform the H-1B visas norms by replacing the lottery system with a merit-based immigration policy.

“Every reputable data source in the US has documented a growing shortfall between the supply and demand for computer science majors in the US workforce, especially in cutting-edge fields such as cloud, big data, and mobile computing,” asserted Nasscom.(read more)
